How to Apply for a Smart Driving Licence (Smart DL) in Kenya

The government of Kenya, through NTSA, took up the task of changing from the manual driving licence booklet to a new card smart driving licence (Smart DL). The card contains a chip that has the driver’s information including; name, date of birth, blood group, and gender.

The Smart DL aims to assist traffic police access a driver’s history and offenses, if any.

How To Apply for Smart DL

  1. Go to https://tims.ntsa.go.ke/ on your browser and log into your TIMS Account. Enter your Username or ID number and password.
  2. Click “Get Code” and a verification code will be sent to your phone.
  3. Enter the verification code and click “Sign In”
  4. Click on “Driving Licence” and select “Apply for smart driving licence”
  5. Fill in the required details. Check to ensure your details are correct then click “Next”
  6. Click “Pay”
  7. You will be redirected to make a payment. Select your preferred payment method and pay Ksh3050.
  8. After making the payment, click “Complete” to finish the process.
  9. You will be redirected to a page with your invoice which you can download in PDF Format.

Once you are done with the application process go back to the menu and click “Smart DL Appointment” Book an appointment with NTSA at your preferred centre. They will collect your biometrics and personal information.

Once your NTSA Smart DL is ready, you will be notified via text.
